Director of the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

Education: He carried out his undergraduate study at the Ubbo Emmius College, Leer where he graduated with B.S. Physics, 1975. Subsequently he went on to attain his M.D from Justus Liebig University, Giessen, 1981. Finally he obtained his Ph.D from Columbia University, NY, 1990.

Research Interests: Include Cell biology; pathomechanisms of inflammation; cytokines and specific inhibitory therapies; multicenter clinical trials in sepsis therapies; nitric oxide in ARDS.

Teaching Experience: Professor Gerlach has given numerous presentations including seminars; practical courses and lectures taken from an extensive knowledge of Anesthesiology, Emergency medicine, Postoperative care medicine and Physiology.

Other information: He chairs many of the renowned Anesthesiology and Critical care Medicine organizations in Germany and has first or senior authored 49 publications, 22 chapters and co-authored 45 books. He has also given a number of invited lectures.
He has received numerous awards including Annual Scientific Award 1999 (1. Price) of the 19th International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, Brussels, Belgium: "Effects of hydrocortisone stress-dose therapy in septic shock: monocyte HLA-DR expression and blood interferon-g concentration. Preliminary results of a double blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over study"; being the most recent.
