Julien Mendlewicz

Julien Mendlewicz is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Brussels. He is Emeritus Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Erasme Hospital (the academic medical centre of the Free University of Brussels, ULB) and he is Emeritus Director of the Laboratory of Psychiatric Research of the ULB's Faculty of Medicine. He is Past President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP).

His research interests include molecular neurobiology and behavioral genetics, chronobiology and sleep, neuropharmacology, brain imaging, and biological psychiatry.

Professor J. Mendlewicz was President of the Belgian Association for the Study and Prevision of Suicide, the Association for the Study of Mental Heath, and Collegium International Neuropsychopharmacologicum. He was Vice-president of the World Federation of Biological Psychiatry and President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology and Director of the Belgian WHO Collaborating Center for Health, Psychosocial and Psychobiological Factors. He is also past president of the Royal Society of Mental Medicine, the Belgian Association for the Study of Sleep, the Belgian College of Biological Psychiatry and Neuropsychopharmacology and the Interdisciplinary Society of Biological Psychiatry.

Professor J. Mendlewicz is President elect of the European Brain Council (EBC). Additional professional positions include Honorary Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF); Member of the Board of the International Group for the Study of the Affective Disorders; Member of the European Science Foundation steering committee on molecular neurobiology of mental illness; Expert for the Biomedical and Health Research (Biomed) Programme of the Commission of the European Communities, WHO expert in Neuropsychiatry and Neurosciences; Member of the Board of Directors of the International Academy on Brain and Nervous System Health (WHO Neuroscience Programme); Foreign Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Head of Faculty: Psychiatry (since 16 November 2005)

Julien Mendlewicz is a Head of Faculty for the PSYCHIATRY Faculty. The role of a Head of Faculty is to help divide the Faculty (specialty) into Sections (sub-specialty areas), nominate leaders in those areas as Section Heads, and offer ongoing advice on the strategic direction of the service. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
