Basic research is focussing on experimental investigations in the pathophysiology and function of mast cells, which play a major role in the elicitation of allergic reactions in the skin and mucosa membrane. Experiments are performed primarily on human mast cells derived from skin and mucosa tissue and on mast cell precursors from the blood. The research aims at a better understanding of the development and functioning of the different mediators and factors involved in the allergic reaction and their role in other inflammatory processes as well as investigating the influence of therapeutic intervention on the allergic reaction.
